Mexico 2018

This year we returned to Mexico around the time of the traditional ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations and spent time in Mexico City and Oaxaca making the most of the unique culture and amazing cuisine on offer.

As part of a coffee brand design development for the Marketthalle 9 in Berlin, we set out to determine how to use packaging to create added value to the coffee sourced directly from Oaxaca in central Mexico and to what extent sustainability could be a motivating factor in attracting the urban target groups in Berlin.
We met with the coffee producers co-operative, Los Montanas de Pluma in Oaxaca, to discuss our concept of making the packaging from the pulp of the previously discarded coffee bean husks that would provide improved moisture protection during the transportation of the bulk coffee beans from Mexico to Germany. The resultant consumer packaging development is sustainable and functional whose difference distinguishes it from the usual bags and creates a connection between the farmer and the connoisseur.
